The laptop battery is damaged and/or cracked open, can you recycle it?

A damaged or punctured laptop battery is a hazard, and it may smoke or catch on fire.  Please do the following:

  • Place the battery into a non-flammable material such as sand or kitty litter as soon as possible. If it is smoking, put it in a bucket of water.
  • Place the battery (one per bag) in a clear plastic bag with the sand or kitty litter. Take it to your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) recycling center.

The laptop battery is bulging but not punctured or damaged, can you recycle it?

Yes, but please be careful and do not damage the battery and do not use the battery.  If you can remove the battery without damage, then place it into a clear plastic bag but be sure to protect the battery from puncture. There are numerous other places that will accept batteries for recycling; recycling the battery as soon as possible is the safest option.
